LGBT History Month started on October 1st, and in honor of its beginning the Hamilton College GSU has brought back its Out and Ally List from a seven year hiatus. LGBT History Month was started in 1994 by a Missouri High School teacher, Rodney Wilson, as a way to honor gay and lesbian history, and it has since expanded to be a nationwide celebration. Also in October is National Coming Out Day, which arrives on the 11th of the month.
The Out and Ally List was created at Hamilton in 2011. At the time, same-sex marriage was legalized in ten countries and six states: New York, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Iowa, Vermont, New Hampshire, with the inclusion of Washington D.C. Today, same-sex marriage is legal in 36 countries and six continents.
